Wish You Were Here Surprise Window Card

Hello there, Christine here with a card inspired by Jennifer McGuire. She made a video and has a blog post this week showing how to make a suprise window inside a card that pops out. I was so inspired by her card and by Jeannie Lieu’s beach card that I decided to make a beach scene inside my A7 card.

Let’s start with the inside of the card first. I measured out a piece of blue cardstock with the dimensions 6 inches by 8.5 inches. Holding the paper with the long (8.5 inches) sideways, I scored the piece 3 times at 4.25 inches and then again at 2.125 inches (2 and 1/8 inch) and at 6.375 (6 and 3/8 inches). It should look like the piece I have below where the creases are equidistant, but are folded like an accordion.

I then wanted to create a scene that would pop out, so I used the long cloud die from the Slimline Rainbow Builder die set, but turned it upside down to create waves as shown below. I always try to put pieces of the card on the scene that I’m planning to make sure it all fits. I then did partial die cutting with the inner cardstock piece folded over.

I then did the same thing to the top of the card, but used it the correct way so that I could cut clouds out with partial die cutting as shown below:

Now I had the frame work of the pop out ready and I used all the cloud dies from the Slimline Rainbow Builder die set to actually cut clouds out of white cardstock. To add more interest to the water portion, I used the Stitched Waves die set to make actual waves by die cutting as shown below:

I then ink blended mermaid lagoon all over the waves and added white gel pen marks to create interest. I ink blended some tea dye distress oxide ink on top of the waves to create sand and made a few lines dots with a copic marker to blend it all in together.

I then fussy cut the Wish You Were Here stamp set image and did some simple copic coloring. In order for both images to fit well, I actually separated them (I don’t think you need to do this and creased Mr. Gnome. Prior to attaching the gnomes I inked some palm trees using the Layered Palm Tree stencil and the lucky clover, pine needle, brushed corduroy and walnut stain distress inks. Finally I adhered the clouds, added a sentiment and the inside of my card was finished! I only adhered the outer 2 flaps of the accordion panel to the inside of the card base, and opened and closed the card several times to make sure it all worked well.

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope that you can see that you can use the dies you have to create your own surprise window pop-out card.

  1. That’s gorgeous! I love the way you added the clouds and waves. I saw Jennifer’s video and hope to make one of these surprise window cards soon.
