VIDEO: Ink-Blended Patriotic Birthday Card

Hi friends! Jessica Frost-Ballas here, and today I’m excited to share a video tutorial for this fun and festive patriotic birthday card!  You can find a video tutorial for this card below or at this link.

I started by creating a vibrant background with Festive Berries and Blueprint Sketch distress oxide inks.  Using my Blending Buddies, I lightly blended the colors onto either end of an A2 panel, feathering the ink about an inch inward so the colors fade into a soft white center. I went back and forth between the two shades until I achieved a rich, saturated color on both ends.Once I was happy with the blend, I dried the panel with a heat gun and added texture by spritzing it with water. I blotted off the excess with a paper towel and let it dry completely.

Next, I die-cut the Oh My Pie die set layers from white and kraft cardstock. To give the kraft layers dimension, I blended Tea Dye distress ink around the edges, keeping the color darker on the outside and lighter toward the center for a realistic crust look.  For the cherry filling, I colored the white circle die-cut with copic markers. I started with a layer of R24 then added shading with R29 around the edge and R27 in a smaller circle inside.  I sketched little circles for the cherries and then filled in the gaps with tiny dots of each color and layered over the entire filling once more with R24 for a cohesive look.

To add even more depth, I blended a bit of Vintage Photo distress ink around the pie and gave all the pieces a quick spritz of water.  After everything dried, I adhered the layers together and mounted the pie onto my ink-blended panel.  For the sentiment, I stamped and heat-embossed greetings from the Hap-Pie Day stamp set onto black cardstock and adhered them to the pie.  To give the pie a sweet finishing touch, I applied Nuvo Crystal Glaze to the top crust and sprinkled it with Rock Candy glitter to create the illusion of sanding sugar!

Thanks so much for stopping by, and until next time—happy crafting!
