VIDEO: How to Create a Mixed Media Galaxy Background

Good morning!  Jessica Frost-Ballas here with a video sharing how to create a mixed media galaxy background!  You can find a video tutorial for this card below or at this link.

I begin by spraying a panel of white cardstock with Distress Resist Spray and letting it dry completely. I love how the spray leaves behind droplets of different sizes—it creates a natural, starry look.  While the panel dries, I die-cut the pieces from the Blast Off  die set to build my rocket, using a mix of regular and glitter cardstock for extra sparkle.  I use liquid glue to adhere the pieces together.

Once the background is dry, I use Blending Buddies blending brushes to apply Peacock Feathers, Picked Raspberry, and Mustard Seed Distress Inks in random patches. The resist spray repels the ink beautifully, leaving bright white specks that resemble stars. I then blend Black Soot Distress Ink around the colors to create depth. It looks a little chaotic at first, but I keep layering and blending the original colors back into the black to smooth harsh lines and bring back vibrancy. I finish by spraying shimmer spray over the panel and adding splatters of metallic gold and silver watercolor from the Gansai Tambi Starry Colors palette.

Next, I trim the panel to A2 size (4.25″ x 5.5″) and die-cut several cloud pieces from the Blast Off die set. I score one of the larger clouds to wrap around the back of the panel allowing the clouds to open and reveal the full galaxy background. I attach a strip of clear acetate to the back of the rocket body and tuck it into the cloud layers for a little added stability.

To finish the card, I stamp a sentiment from the You’re Stellar stamp set and adhere part of it to the front cloud flap, hiding the rest on the galaxy panel underneath. When the cloud flap opens, the full sentiment is revealed. Galaxy backgrounds can often look like a hot mess for 90% of the process, but with a little patience you’ll end up with a beautiful result!  Thanks so much for stopping by and have an amazing weekend!
