Guest Designer – Jen Hartsgrove

Hey Krafty Friends! I’m Jen from Katahdin Krafts, my krafty korner of the world is in Northern Maine, where I’m a home-school mom of three, and funny farm navigator! I’m wicked excited to be Trinity’s April Guest Designer. They have fabulous products that I absolutely love working with. The first thing that caught my eye from Trinity was their Slimline Card Series, and all their wizard stamps. I love them!!

When I was asked to be a guest designer for Trinity, I wanted my first project to be with my favorite products!

Of course that meant a wizardy slimline card. I did so many things outside of my normal box for this card. It was exciting to see it finally all come together.

I started my background panel off with Distress Oxide Sprays. I cut a piece of watercolor paper 8.75″ x 3.75″ and sprayed it with Picked Raspberry, Wilted Violet and Chipped Sapphire Oxides. I kept spraying in layers, and adding water as well. In between each layer I dried with my heat tool. When I finally had the results I was looking for, I sprayed with water again and blotted using a paper towel. I wanted my card to have a mystical feel to it, so I sprayed it with Imagine Sheer Shimmer craft spray.

Then I used Picket Fence Distress Paint thinned out with a little water and splattered on my project. The paint reacted with the spray oxides and gave more of a pinkish tone than white when it dried. I also wanted to have a distinctive white area for my moon, so I painted a circle with the distress paint. Then I made a softer moon glow with Hero Arts unicorn ink, I used a round blender and used a twisting motion to make a moon halo. I then used a smaller blending brush to soften the edges. I used a paint brush and put a few spots of Distress Oxide Ink in Frayed Burlap to make a moon creators.

Next, I used Trinity’s Layered Birch Stencils. I sprayed the back of the stencil with Pixie Spray to make sure all the delicate pieced adhered to my paper. Then I did three different layers of color, with Distress Oxide Inks. The first layer was with Frayed Burlap, the second layer was Black Soot and the third was with Antique Linen. I used Trinity’s Slimline Card Series Stitched Card Panels and cut out my card panel.

I moved the stencil down the panel to make sure I had the whole thing covered because of the slimline length.

I waited for my background to dry, then I used the “stag” from Trinity’s Season Greetings Silhouettes Stamp set. I stamped the image on my panel first using Hero Arts unicorn ink, then Versamark, then I embossed it with Hero Arts clear embossing powder. After I set the powder, I wasn’t happy with the look I achieved, I wanted the stag to stand out a little more. So I stamped Versamark again over the image and heat embossed it this time with Hero Arts White embossing powder. This gave me the look I was going for.

I used Trinity’s Shine Brighter Stencil for spacing, so I could add some embossed sparkles around the stag, and the magic coming from the wand. I heat embossed those with white embossing powder as well. Next I used the Shine Brighter Stencil Set, to illuminate behind the stag, to make it look magical. I first used Pumice Stone Oxide Ink, I added some silver ink as well. Then added some silver ink onto the stag.

Next it was time to construct Harry, which is from Trinity’s Magical Wizards stamp set. I wanted him to wear his robes for this card, so I also used the Wizard Friends set. I stamped the robe onto Neenah Solar White cardstock, then also on to a mask. I then fussy cut out the mask, and placed it over the robe, so I could stamp Harry’s head into place. I used Copic friendly ink and colored my image with Copic markers.

I wanted my sentiment to be the spell that Harry Potter used to call his Patronus, so I printed “Expecto Patronum!” off of my printer and cut with a banner die to add to my card. I used Trinity’s Slimline Card Series Scalloped Card Panels to cut a frame in blue yardstick. Then I put them both onto my card base. My card base was 8.75″ x 7.5″, and scored at the 3.75″ mark. I added a few dew drops from my stash, and was super happy with my final results!

It was exciting to see my end results, because I definitely used techniques I wasn’t super familiar with for this project. But I love learning new krafty approaches.

A little story on the stag, it was Harry Potter’s patronus. A patronus is a form of advanced magic, which even seasoned wizards can have issues with, Harry Potter was the youngest wizard at the age of 13 to master this craft. A patronus acts as a shield, a positive force, it is hope, happiness and the desire to survive. That is what inspired me for this card, we all need that in our lives now. I found an online quiz to find your own patronus, mine was a black and white cat, I actually have a black and white cat! Apparently, Ruby kitty is my hope. Wishing you all hope, happiness and a desire to survive this storm.

Thank you so much to Trinity Stamps for my guest spot! It was an honor to work with your products!

Happy krafting until next time! You can find a complete list of supplies on my website!
